Learning & Community

The Spina Bifida Resource Network (SBRN) continues to be a trusted resource for individuals and families living with spina bifida and other disabilities. Through education, recreation, and peer support, we strive to empower individuals and strengthen our community.

SBRN publishes its in-house educational newsletter, The Empowerment Zone, which is widely distributed through email and social media. The newsletter provides valuable information on health and wellness topics, legislative updates, educational issues, advocacy efforts, and community and agency news. In addition, our website offers extensive resources on a variety of topics relevant to individuals with spina bifida and their families.

We also host numerous  virtual support groups and interactive presentations, for adults, which provide information in a format easily accessible from home. Our support groups encourage peers to share advice and friendship, while our presentations and discussions offer insightful conversations hosted by experts in the field, many of whom are disabled.

In 2026, SBRN launched Unstoppable, a new peer-based program created specifically for teens and young adults ages 13–20 with spina bifida and similar disabilities. The program provides a welcoming and supportive environment where participants can build friendships, develop self-advocacy and leadership skills, and engage in fun and meaningful activities. Through social connections, mentorship, and shared experiences, Unstoppable empowers young people to grow in confidence and embrace their potential.

Together, these educational and recreational opportunities help individuals and families build knowledge, foster independence, and create lasting connections within the disability community.

The Spina Bifida Resource Network prioritizes providing safe and open environments for participation and discussion in all of our programs. SBRN reserves the right, at our discretion, to deny a person from participating in any program due to behavior that is considered by SBRN to be inappropriate, violent, threatening, offensive or unwelcome, or that causes harm or discomfort, intentionally or not, to other SBRN participants, volunteers, invited guests or staff.
